The Art of Psychiatry

We are pleased to announce that as of mid-April, we will be showcasing the captivating and thought-provoking artwork of our colleague Bilge Ugursu at MDC-BIMSB in Mitte. Some of you may already be familiar with her artwork, perhaps through her exhibitions at the Long Night of the Sciences.

The exhibition will be opened with a vernissage on Friday, April 12^th at 5:00 pm at the MDC-BIMSB where Bilge will talk about the interaction between her scientific and artistic endeavors. You are warmly invited to join us for the event, which includes a small reception and “meet the artist” session! Prior registration is not required.

Bilge Ugursu is a scientist at the Susanne Wolf lab and an abstract artist. Focussing on figurative abstract expressionism, she incorporates mixed media in the majority of her artworks, which have been showcased in many international art galleries since 2018. 

Her recent art project explores the intersection of art and psychiatry, aiming to address fundamental questions such as “How does perception of art relate to the mental state of its viewers?” Through her art she portrays internal struggles and anxieties associated with different mental states, allowing viewers to gain a deeper understanding of these experiences. Her goal is to encourage conversations about the impact of social norms, cultural expectations and systemic inequalities on mental health. Ultimately, she aims to embrace the diversity of human experiences, breaking down stigmas and fostering a society where mental health is valued and everyone feels recognized, heard, and accepted.
